Childhood hunger is rising in New Hanover County. When a child suffers from lack of nutrition, it creates a ripple effect in the child’s life, classroom, and neighborhood community. It doesn’t just weaken the child, it weakens us as a nation. It's not"just their problem", it's ours.
Nourish NC began in 2008 when a small group of concerned women discovered that children in their school were going hungry on weekends. These parents decided to take action and funded a backpack program for those 20 children at Carolina Beach Elementary School. News of the success spread quickly and we expanded to a middle school in 2009. With widespread interest in the program, Nourish NC became a 501(c)3 non-profit and now provides weekend meals for over 190 children in New Hanover County schools. We also provide weekend food for the long holiday and summer breaks.
We envision a community united in its mission to support and help meet the most basic needs of our under-resourced members. We believe it is possible for neighbors, local businesses and community organizations to join together to create positive change. We're committed to creating an environment that helps train and equip everyday people, business leaders and community groups for this purpose.
The six Cs below keep us united in our purpose of positively changing children's lives:
