One in four children in New Hanover County goes hungry daily. That means 25% of the children in New Hanover County experience food insecurity. When a child suffers from lack of nutrition, it creates a ripple effect in the child’s life, classroom, neighborhood, and community. Children who lack proper nutrition have documented decreases in mental and physical development. Hunger can result in irritability, poor performance in school, and an inability to normalize within peer groups, all of which can follow children into adulthood and affect their quality of life and further perpetuates the cycle of poverty. We cannot let chronic childhood hunger happen on our watch.
Could you imagine coming to work hungry every day, or not eating over the weekend, and then being expected to perform your best at work on Monday? That’s what is happening every weekend, right here, right now, to almost, 1500 children in New Hanover County. We believe that if children receive proper nutrition over the weekend they will come to school on Monday morning, alert and ready to learn.
In 2008, a small group of women discovered that children in their school were going hungry on weekends and digging through trash cans after everyone had left the school. These parents took action and NourishNC was born. Now, NourishNC serves over 530 food insecure children in 25 New Hanover County Schools. Food insecurity in children has become so prevalent in our county that 17 New Hanover County Schools declared 100% of their population eligible for free lunch in the 2014-2015 school year.
When you buy a ticket, you will not only have a great evening, but you will move us toward our goal of feeding 100 more hungry children in the upcoming year. What we do has a direct and immediate affect on a child’s life. We believe it is possible for neighbors, local businesses and community organizations to join together to create positive change. We’re committed to creating an environment that helps train and equip everyday people, business leaders and community groups for this purpose. Will you make a difference in a child’s life today?
